These may be performed in two circumstances. The first is when an employee has missed work or has been placed on leave due to an emotionally trying experience, on or off the job. These can include critical incidents on duty such as shootings or the death of a coworker, or a personal loss such as the death of a family member. It is important to both the agency and the employee to assess their readiness to safely return to duty.
The second circumstance occurs when an employee’s behavior has suggested the possible presence of a psychological impairment which might impair their ability to safely perform their duties. These examinations attempt to rule in or out the presence of an impairment, and examine the impact of a possible impairment on the employee’s ability to safely perform their duties.
